Watercolor begins with a simple relationship: pigment, water, and paper. Learning to paint with it means learning when to control that relationship, and when to let the unpredictable nature of water take over.
We will explore the fundamental techniques of watercolor through a series of small exercises and studies. We will work with washes, transparency, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, layering, edges, lifting, and color mixing, while learning how different amounts of water and pigment transform a mark.
Rather than rushing toward a finished painting, this course creates space to experiment, make mistakes, and become familiar with the behavior of the medium. By the end, students will have a practical vocabulary of watercolor techniques they can carry into their own work, and into other upcoming workshops at the studio.
No previous watercolor or drawing experience is necessary.
